How to Extend the Life of Your Car

There’s nothing more frustrating than unexpected car problems. Not only do they cost you money, but they can also cost you a lot of valuable time. You can save your money and time by doing a few things that will extend the life of your car.

Learn more about some of the ways you can extend the life of your vehicle by reading below.

Keep a Regular Maintenance Schedule

A properly maintained car lasts much longer than vehicles not well maintained. If you want your vehicle for many years and many miles, make sure you keep to your recommended maintenance schedule.

  • Oil and other fluids: Avoid damage to your engine by changing your oil and other fluids your car requires by following the manufacturer’s recommendations. Skipping out on these scheduled changes can lead to metal-eating muck, a lack of efficiency, and will eventually cause your engine to fail.
  • Filters: Clean air filters are critical in keeping dust, dirt, and other airborne debris from getting inside your engine. Follow the guidelines set by your vehicle’s manufacturer. Additionally, you’ll need to make sure your oil filter is swapped out each time your oil is changed.
  • Tires: Your tires are all that’s between you and the road. Take the time to check your tire pressure and make sure they are in good condition. Moreover, you need to rotate your tires as often as necessary.

Keep On Top of Repairs

Delaying necessary repairs can lead to further damage, costing you more money. Don’t ignore the unusual or alarming sounds your car is making or the “Check Engine” light illuminated on your dash. Address these issues as soon as they become a problem.

Keep Your Car Clean

Did you know that a clean car, inside and out, not only keeps it looking good, but it also helps your vehicle retain higher resale value?

  • Exterior: Keeping the surface of your car clean from dirt, mud, and other residues can prolong the life of your paint job. Remnants of salt from the winter months can cause rust that will eventually lead to holes in the metal exterior of your car.

  • Interior: Keeping your interior clean is just as important as your exterior. Mop up spills the moment they happen to avoid stains and keep your dash free of dust.

Keep Your Car Parked in the Garage

Too much exposure to the elements is not for your car. If you can, keep your car parked in a garage when not in use. If a garage is unavailable to you, try parking in a covered area, like a carport, or shield your car from the elements with a car cover.
